At 6:32 pm on April 6, 2009, a massive earthquake shook the city of L’Aquila and its surrounding area. It was particularly tragic in the village of Onna in the periphery. Of the 300 inhabitants, 40 died that night. Only one rubble field remained. Already during the Second World War the village was hit by a misfortune: On 11 June 1944 soldiers of the German Wehrmacht committed during their retreat a massacre and destroyed nearly a third of all buildings.
The small village Onna is a place of pain. Almost everyone here has to suffer losses in the family. It is not easy to live with it. An earthquake is more than a vibration of stones, it is a shake of the belief in the fundamental strength of the world and reveals its provisional nature. Ten years after the earthquake, the people of Onna still live in the huts next to the ruin field that had previously been their village. The reconstruction is progressing slowly.
I photographed the village and portrayed the people: children, adolescents and older people. Grief and pain, but also resistance and strength I found in the faces. I have photographed village landscapes and I were deeply immersed in the past of the place. Thus, the overflowing images from the past combine with the quiet, deserted recordings of the present.
„Voices Seeking One Another“ is a work of memory, of the passing of time, of pain and loss, but also of the human capacity to live one’s life in spite of everything. There is only this one. Everything lives on, but the earthquake shows how quickly the present can decay into a before and a after. I pick up the strings and try to reunite them for the viewer.
„Voices that seek“ was created on the initiative and with the support of the Goethe-Institut Rome, the association „Onna Onlus“ and the inhabitants of the village of Onna.

Per il decimo anniversario del terremoto, il Goethe-Institut ha invitato l’artista Göran Gnaudschun, artista che ha fatto del ricordo collettivo e della sua rilevanza un momento centrale della sua ricerca, a realizzare fotografie e raccogliere materiale sul passato e sul presente della comunità onnese. Questo lavoro sarà presentato in una mostra che inaugurerà il 6 aprile 2019 a Casa Onna.
“Il 6 aprile 2009 alle 3:32 del mattino una violentissima serie di scosse fa tremare la città de L’Aquila e le zone limitrofe. A essere gravemente danneggiata è soprattutto la frazione di Onna, nella periferia de L’Aquila. In quella notte perdono la vita 40 dei suoi 300 abitanti e il paesino viene raso al suolo. Già durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale Onna era stata colpita da una sciagura: l’11 giugno 1944, durante la ritirata, alcuni soldati della Wehrmacht tedesca massacrarono 17 abitanti e distrussero un terzo di tutti gli edifici.
Le immagini della storia più lontana e recente si equivalgono. Sciagure, che siano perpetrate dall’uomo o naturali, portano a conseguenze simili, ma è la mancanza di logica che spesso è difficile da comprendere. Il paesino di Onna è un luogo del dolore. Quasi tutti in paese rammaricano la perdita di un caro. Non è facile convivere con questo destino. A dieci anni dal terremoto, gli abitanti di questa frazione vivono ancora accampati accanto alle macerie di quello che dieci anni prima era il loro paese, mentre i lavori di ricostruzione procedono a rilento.
Il passato non trascorre mai, resta presente, lasciando una ferita nel tempo e nelle famiglie. Le macerie delle case ne sono l’espressione tangibile e il ricordo delle persone è un campo invisibile che le circonda”. (Göran Gnaudschun)
