Murcia is a sun-drenched region on Spain’s Mediterranean coast. People have been migrating to this area for thousands of years. Iberians, Phoenicians, Romans and Visigoths left their traces. In the Middle Ages, the border between Islamic and Christian Spain ran here. It is not only the historical cultural contacts between Moors, Christians and Jews that have shaped the region to this day.

The climate is ideal for growing fruit and vegetables, and the local agricultural industry supplies the whole of Europe. Workers come to the region from Africa, South America and Eastern Europe. Other immigrants come from Northern and Central Europe: they value Murcia as a retirement home.

Göran Gnaudschun travelled to Murcia in 2020 for the “Museum of European Cultures” in Berlin. With the approach that migration is a primordial theme of humanity, he photographed portraits, urban and agricultural landscapes, as well as the legacies of the most diverse cultures that have settled southern Spain throughout history.

His new work “The Better Life” is part of the exhibition “Murcia: In Europe’s garden”, which opens at the 17th European Cultural Days.
